‘You can trip up if what you’re putting out is different from who you are privately’ To say Griff is the future of British pop would be inaccurate only because, at 20, she has already established herself on the scene. In February, Griff won the Brits Rising Star award, following in the footsteps of Adele, Florence And The Machine and Rag’N’Bone Man, who then covered the title track of One Foot In Front Of The Other on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge. Her music is everywhere, from the soundtrack of Disney’s 2020 Christmas advert to the desirable end of the UK Top 100 the aforementioned seven-track mixtape, broke into the top five of the UK album chart despite not officially being an album.
Suffice to say, the artist born Sarah Griffiths in 2001, has been treading the tightrope (forgive the metaphor) of burgeoning pop stardom with aplomb since the release of her debut single, “Mirror Talk”, in 2019. It’s typical Griff: equally fearless and measured. In the photo that was eventually chosen for the cover, you can see the concentration on Griff’s face, but also the sense of calm and poise that is keeping her balanced.
